Preston Beach and Weymouth Bay, July 1996. A major replenishment scheme earlier in 1996 has delivered 2.2 million cubic metres of marine dredged gravel to replenish the formerly depleted barrier beach. The A353 road and a considerable low-lying hinterland are protected by the beach. The town of Weymouth was established upon the southern extension of the original barrier type spit that deflected the entrance to the original Wey estuary (now Weymouth Harbour and Radipole Lake) southward against Nothe Point (visible in distance).
