Torre Sands and Abbey Torquay, 2001. Seawall defences back a depleted low gradient sandy foreshore. Formerly, a landward migrating barrier beach occupied the bay with saltmarsh behind. The seawall and esplanade were constructed along the crest of the original barrier beach and former marshy land behind has been reclaimed and developed. Some of this land is potentially susceptible to subsidence due to the compressible nature of the marsh sediments.
