Seawall protecting the B3395 at Yaverland, 2000. The seawall and esplanade are constructed upon a previously mobile barrier beach. Note that the levels of the road and the land behind are at, or below the tidal level (a high neap tide). Without the seawall, the barrier would be vulnerable to overwashing, landward migration and probable breaching. A new tidal inlet could form and the low-lying land could become subject to frequent tidal inundation.
