Shanklin Esplanade 2001. Installation of groynes in the late 1860s intercepted large quantities of northward drifting sediment causing the MHW to advance seaward by up to 80m. The esplanade and its hotels were subsequently constructed at the cliff toe on this beach impounding its sediments. The original sea-cliffs (to left) were thus abandoned, but have continued to degrade slowly.
