Town of Chiswell behind the eastern end of Chesil beach 2001.The dependence of the lower town upon upon the high, steep barrier of Chesil for flood defence is clearly evident. Southern parts are protected by a seawall (seen to right). Gabion mattresses have been constructed to stabilise the crest and interceptor drains have been installed to prevent percolation through the beach from causing flooding.
