West Weare cliffs, Isle of Portland, 2001. Blocks of resistant Portland Stone cap rock become detached at the backscar controlled by NE-SW master joints and fissures. The blocks descend close to seal-level and rotate backwards, often forming sequences of multiple rotated blocks. Many of the boulder piles within the undercliffs comprise quarry waste that historically was tipped over the cliff top.
