Birling Gap beach and cliffs 2002. A debris filled valley within the Chalk forms a small embayment within which a pocket beach of flint gravel has accumulated. A small community is threatened by the recession of the soft cliffs, but protection will not be provided at this location as it would further reduce natural inputs of flints to the beach. Other environmental and aesthetic arguments were also made against defences at a recent public inquiry that examined this issue.
