Cuckmere Haven, 1998. A gravel barrier beach occupies the eastern part of the embayment and protects the low-lying river flood plain. The area is of high habitat value with shingle vegetation on the barrier and a series of lagoons immediately behind. An intertidal habitat creation scheme is proposed for part of the back barrier area involving controlled inundation from the tidal Cuckmere River. Note the gravel swash bars within the surf zore. It is believed that they migrate landwards from the Cuckmere River ebb tidal delta supplying gravel to the barrier.
